Below you will find some HTML Words & Definitions. 

Web Page~    A Document on the Internet.

FYI    Web Pages can contain Text, Images, Sounds and Video.

Fact    Web Pages are HTML Documents.

Website~    A Collection of Web Pages.

FYI    Having more than one web page (an HTML Document) that Link together is considered a website.

Fact    Web Pages that are HTML Documents make up a website.

Web Server~    A Computer that stores Web Pages and makes pages available on the Internet for others to view.

FYI    Usually, your website's Web Server will be provided by your ISP.

Fact    Using your ISP's Web Server saves you space on your personal computer, because you are not acting as the Web Server yourself.
If you did, it would bog down your computer.

URL~    Uniform Resource Locator

FYI    This would be the address of your own website, your URL. (Example: is a URL.)

Fact    Some URL's are Long and some are Short in length.
If you end up with a Long URL once you get your website up and running.
Simply visit Snip URL to create a shorter version of your Long URL.

HyperLink~    Text or Images that connect (Link) to other pages on the Internet or within your website.

FYI    Also know as Link.

Fact    You can create a Link in different ways.
Use a Picture and your visitors have to click on that Picture to use the Link you provided.
Or, you can use Text and your visitors have to click on the Text to use the Link you provided.

HTML~    HyperText MarkUp Language.

FYI    In order for you to communicate with your Computer and it's Browser Windows, you must be able to (speak) Type HTML.

Fact    HTML Documents are written in "NotePad" and saved with the file extension of .html
Example: mywebsitepage2.html

Web Browser~    A program that allows you to view and explore information on the Internet.

FYI    A Browser Window is any window that opens up when you open a program on your computer, or when you get onto the Internet.

Fact    Examples of Web Browsers Used, *Internet Explorer and *Mozilla FireFox.

ISP~    Internet Service Provider.

FYI    Your ISP may offer you a FREE Website with your Internet Service! Check your ISP's Home Page.

Fact    ISP's give you access onto the Internet.

HTML Document~    A Notepad Document written in HTML.

FYI    Save your HTML file OFTEN as you're working on it.
You will lose all the HTML you've already typed if your computer locks up or crashes.
Better to save your work often, rather than losing it and having to start all over!

Fact    All HTML Files MUST be saved using the file extension of .html

Home Page~    The Main Page of any Website.

FYI    This is usually the first page a person visits when they land on any website.

Fact    All websites have only ONE Home Page.

Text Editor~    A Program used to create and edit documents that contain only text.

FYI    Example of a Text Editor: Windows Notepad Program.

Fact    Notepad is a Great Tool for writing HTML Web Documents.

HTML Tags~    Tags are Specific HTML instructions surrounded by Angle Brackets.

FYI    Example of a Tag: <html></html>

Fact    Tags give directions to your computer and your browser windows.
Directions that describe how you want your webpage or website to be displayed to your visitors.

Attributes~    Options that you can add on to Tags.

FYI    Examples of Attributes~ bold, borders, sizes, alignment.

Fact    Attributes can be added onto Text, Pictures and more.

Font~    A Text Style.

FYI    Examples of Fonts~ Arial, Tahoma, Comic Sans.

Fact    When choosing a Font to use on your website, stick to well known Fonts, like the ones mentioned above.
You want to use Fonts that your website viewers will have on their computers.
If you use a Font that a visitor does NOT have on their computer, your website text will not display for your viewer.

GIF~    Graphics Interchange Format

FYI    .gif is a "File Extension". Most Graphics saved as a .gif file are animated graphics.

Fact    If you don't save an animated graphic as a .gif, your Graphic will become a still graphic, meaning, no animation.

JPEG or JPG~    Joint Photographic Experts Group.

FYI    .jpeg or .jpg are "File Extensions".

Fact    Graphics saved as a .jpeg or a .jpg are still graphics, meaning no movement.

Hexadecimal Value~    A Color Code.

FYI    There are only 16 colors you can specify by name. All other colors must be written with a code.

Fact    Many websites use only 3 to 4 colors throughout their site.

Formatting~    To keep your written HTML Code neat and separated into sections.

FYI    Trying to locate an error in your HTML code is very hard to do with unformatted text.

Fact    Get into the habit of formatting your HTML Documents.

Some New Information

on your Browser Window to a smaller size. This will correct the problem.

HTML Basic Layout~ This paper was given to you in class    This will always be your basic starting point when starting a New HTML Document.

FYI    Example~ You would type the basic layout into a brand new "Notepad" file, also known as your HTML Document.
Save your Notepad File with the .html file extension.
Then start adding to the basic layout, meaning, start building your website by using HTML Code.

Fact    If you do not type HTML Code correctly, your web page will not be displayed as you had intended..

Fact    HTML Code can be written in Uppercase, Capital Letters. Or HTML Code can be written in Lowercase, Small Letters.
Tip~ Writing HTML Tags in all Capital Letters, will help you later if you have to locate an error in your code, or if you simply want to update your website with some changes.
Tip~ Try writing all your Tags in all Capitals and everything else in lower case.

Meaning of Basic Layout Tags~   

Fact    *HTML Section tells your computer and your Browser that you are creating a web page.
*Head Section holds hidden information for your Browser.
*Title Section is the Title you give your Browser Window. This is visable to your website visitors.
*Body Section is where you create what will be on your web page.

Angle Brackets~ Very Important    Most Tags have a pair of Angle Brackets. One is an Opening Angle Bracket and the other is a Closing Angle Bracket.

FYI    Example~ <   > is the Opening Bracket.
< / > is the Closing Bracket.

Think of it as... if you OPEN a Door, You have to CLOSE the door.
Opening the door ~ starts an action. Closing the door ~ stops an action.
